Westfield mall

At least their ad's are better than their logo.
However although its a good commercial ad for a shopping mall, it cost 6 million to make! insane! The spot is the most expensive ever for a shopping centre.

Show and Sell Wednesdays

Another successful show and sell! Some heated discussions, some xrays, some break dancing and some drugs. First up is this sweeeeeeet viral involving some fresh moves from some of americas most finest.

The presidential race has been a hot topic in the last few show and sell sessions, we should be getting bored of the subject by now but its hard to avoid when they keep on coming up with cool shit like this.
Next up, artist Nick Vasey. Nick Veasey uses x-ray technology to create mesmerizing and intriguing art. In a world obsessed with superficial appearance it is a refreshing change to be able to look beyond the surface. Nick also holds the world record for the largest ever x-ray when captured the Boing747 in its hanger. Check out some of his work in high def here.

Another pick from the discussion was the new Westfield Supermall logo.

All agreed that it was hideous. Although logo designs like this tend to grow on me, not literally. But will see if i warm to it in the future, wont be holding my breath.

Read this immediately!

Just finished reading Matt Beaumont's novel 'e'. The book is about life in an advertising agency, narrated entirely through office emails. Very clever idea, and works really well. If you have worked in the advertising agency before you can really relate to some of the scenarios. Interesting how you can build up a perception of someone just by reading the emails that they send. I highly recommend this book.

Wassup America?

The internet has been heaving with political campaigns recently for both McCain and Obama. Most of the content has been cheap videos made by supporters of each group or annoying pop-up's on websites. However I have just seen, what i believe to be, the best political campaign advert so far. Its a remake of Budweiser's infamous 'Wasuup' commercial from eight years ago. It uses the same actors as the original but all in different situations. In such a clever way it shows how America has gone down hill from the last time they all uttered the famous 'wassup' down the phone. From a guy in Iraq to a guy hanging himself in his bedroom because of the financial crisis. In just two minutes it manages to touch on all that is wrong with America, using just four characters and small dialogue. The end shot then reveals who the advert is in support of - its in support of 'change' of course. Pukka mate!

Show and Sell Wednesdays

The second helping of Show and Sell was another success. Although we had a lower turnout than our debut weekend, the content was still just as exiting. On show this week was: Jason Hackenwereth, Jason is an artist who using balloons as his medium creates fantastic sculptures. Jason's sculpture/balloons have brought him huge success and is now currently exhibiting some of his work in bloomingdales New York. Here is some of Jason's work.

Another topic was a great campaign for 7-eleven in america. 7-eleven have taken it upon themselves to issue McCain/Obama cups for every cup of coffee sold. The only catch being that you have to choose what cup you want - McCain or Obama. This data is then captured and acts as a sort of preview to the polls. You can then go to 7-eleven's website to see who's winning.

There was alot of interest in the online phenomenon 'the viral factory'. The Viral Factory have been at it for a few years now creating viral's for clients such as Levis and Lynx. Here are a couple of examples we were shown this week.

We all enjoyed this week and hopefully we will be able to recruit a few more creative minded human beings along to next weeks event.

Augmented Ray-Bans!

This new application for Ray-Ban really is 'pushing the boundries'. Now i have heard whispers of this 'Augmented Reality' before but this is the first time i have seen a brand using the technology. On the Ray-Ban website it allows you to download the 3D technology, from there you hook up your webcam and using the 'virtual mirror' you can try on the full range of sunglasses! Amazing stuff eh?
Slideshow example of the new technology.

Virtual Mirror in full use.

Do you dream about trainers?

Well people at Adidas seem to think so. I don't care, as long as they keep coming up with a print campaigns as cool as this. The art direction is amazing and the 'All Day I Dream About Sneakers' is a nice touch. I wonder if they got their inspiration from english school playgrounds where the infamous 'After Dinner I Did A Shit' was coined?

New MacBook!

Apple has been one of my favorite brands for a long time now. I love the simplicity of everything they do. From the function, to the way you purchase their products, its all an enjoyable and stress free experience. Every new product they bring out seems to be pushing the boundaries of design and function, and it seems as if they haven't let us down with the release of their new MacBook. I received a customer email from apple the other day notifying me about their latest release. After thorough inspection online i decided it was well worthy of a post. So here it is. The MacBook is built from one solid piece of aluminum enabling a thin, light, streamline and durable notebook. The photos of the product look amazing and this video below gives an in depth description of the product and how it was made.

Advert like any other?

Sony are at it again with their new release of 'Domino City.' The commercial was created not by Fallon but by advertising company 'Bates 141 Singapore'. The ad features 8 foot tall coloured dominos working their way through India to the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra. The advert is visually stunning, however with the combination of bright colours and dominos i cant help but feel that i have seen it all before. The use of bright colours has been portrayed in spectacular fashion before with Balls, Paint and Bunny. And with Guinness recently using the domino effect in their Tipping Point ad, that was then ripped off by Pot Noodle and not to mention Cog!. These examples alone, to me, make the advert feel 'done'. However thats my opinion and im no more than a spotty little student, so who cares! Its a visually entertaining 60 seconds and is shot in the amazing India!

The Landlord

Genius.

HD Bond!

This is the new spot to promote both Sony HD and Bonds new release 'Quantum of Solace'. The commercial was created by Fallon London and includes good old Daniel Craig being battered and bruised by a serious of high definition explosions. I think its a stunning commercial with a great soundtrack. I cant wait for it to air on TV so i can watch it on my 40 inch! Enjoy!

Show and Sell Wednesdays

Few of the gang at Show and Sell + Lucia titting herself up!

Show and Sell is an event organized by advertising student and a friend of mine Anna Gordon. The idea behind the event is to share thoughts as a group. To get discussions going, get motivated, and to get inspired by all things creative. The event takes part every Wednesday at LCC University. The only requirement is that you bring along a piece of design, advertising, digital, illustration - anything remotely creative that interests you and may interest others. The first ever Show and Sell was Wednesday just gone and was a real success. We all thoroughly enjoyed the event and are looking forward to next weeks session. Here are a few examples that people brought in to Show and Sell.

National Portrait Gallery

The portrait below of Sir Paul Nurse by Jason Brooks was our pick of the day.

We have just received a new brief for the National Portrait Gallery, so today we took a trip to the gallery in Trafalgar Square. It was an interesting couple of hours and saw some incredible portraits ranging from William Shakespeare to David Beckham. Although the main reason was for primary research we found it an inspirational place that included sofas and lounges, ideal for chilling out with your sketchbook and get 'all creative and that'. Not sure how relevant the trip was as we haven't received the full brief yet, but you can never have too much research eh? Will keep you updated on any progress.

Monday

W+K and Nike just do it again!

This Ad has been flying around the blog scene today, but i thought i should post it incase you haven't already seen it. The spot was created by W+K portland with a little help from director David Fincher. Be sure to watch it in full screen mode with the volume cranked up. Enjoy.

A little goes a long way!

Viral for Fairy Liquid.

Credit Crunch

Latest Economist front page. With the property ladder now turning into a snake many advertisements are using the credit crunch as a theme. Expect more to come.

India withdrawal symptoms

We have been back from India for months now but still miss the place. Heres a little video for you and me to remind us once again how amazing India is. Enjoy.

Sunday

Fountains

This is a 'totally radical' spot for Stimorol Gum. We have just finished filming a viral involving fountains, its a completely different concept but hopefully will turn out to look just as good as this one. Will post it once all the editing is done and dusted.

Subliminal Advertising

Now im sure a fair few of you have seen this before. However i have only just come across it on youtube and feel that its worthy of a post. The video is an experiment set up by magician Derren Brown to prove that anyone can be susceptible to subliminal advertising. He proves his point in excellent fashion by hiring and subconsciously tricking two creatives from MBA Advertising. Its a really interesting and thought provoking experiment. I think creatives could take allot from this experiment. It shows how the mind is always subconsciously working and taking note of everything around you. I would love to see someone take a technique like this and turn it into one big campaign. Maybe one for the book.

Copywriting on a saturday?

'Hopefully the will teach us how to write as good as ol Bill Bernbach'

After a few months on the placement circuit its finally time to go back to university. To be honest im actually looking forward to going back. Not sure why? Maybe its the ability to lay in, the female fashion students, or the exiting briefs! I don't know? but I'm exited! However, for some reason, after all the money we pay to study we only have one lesson a week! So i have made it a mission of mine to get as much out of our last year as possible. This means signing up to all the free extra classes and stealing as much stationary as possible! One extra class that we were really interested in is the copywriting course. We have yet to declare who is the copywriter and who is the art director but thought there would be no harm in both of us having copy skills. The only catch being that this free class falls on a saturday and lasts for ten weeks! We are going to see how long we can last with out soccer saturday and how interesting the class is. Will keep you updated.

Wednesday

Too much chocolate?

Had a week off work and Uni so in between watching Loose Women and Neighbors i have been browsing the blog's. Whilst on my browsing voyage i stumbled upon this! Its a poster for the 'Roy awards'. Apparently the awards ceremony is one of Sweden's most prestigious advertising events. The poster features the now iconic Cadburys Gorilla chucking up its guts. The poster concludes with the line: "Roy: Great advertising and open bar". Now at first glimpse i thought, oh no not another gorilla parody. However, in this case it really does work. Great way of promoting the event - 'open bar'. Open bar being the main focal point of the event gives a great insight into the adverting industry. Hopefully some day soon i mite be able to experience me one of these open bars!
