Freakin Sweet

This great piece of product design is called the 'Umbuster'. The umbrella, from Reyjavik-based designer Sruli Recht was first created back in 2002 as a university project. The final concept has come a long way since the first welded on knuckle duster version. Great way of protecting yourself from chavs whilst it pisses it down outside.

Beautiful, yet nauseating. Make sure you watch it in full screen mode.

'Julien Vallée is so hot right now.'

This is the work of Canadian based graphic designer, Julien Vallée. Vallée likes to work in a range of mediums, creating stunning visuals for the likes of MTV, The New York Times Magazine and YCN Online. His work has received rave reviews and is a constant feature on the ever popular ffffound. With growing success and increasing popularity expect copy cat designers to soon worm their way out of the woodwork. This installation above is my favorite, check out some more of his work to choose yours.

Friday

Young Rorey Delap

I don't usually post stuff like this, but this one made me laugh so much I felt a little bit of wee come out.

Thursday

Coincidence?

Need for speed, or no need for speed? Either great product placement, or just pure luck. Think a case of right place right time, or maybe wrong place wrong time. Ouch, this post has made my brain hurt. Back to the wonders of Microsoft Word I go, adding words of wisdom to the one and only... dissertation.

Tuesday

Oit! Whipple, read this!

Just finished reading the awesome 'Hey Whipple Squeeze This' for the second time round. Its a great book bursting with advice and insights into the advertising industry. This time I found myself highlighting key insights and quotes. Thought i would share one of my favorites with you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

" Look at what your getting paid for - putting your feet up and
thinking. This is what people with real jobs do when they get time off-put their feet up and daydream, drift, and think of goofy stuff. You, you're getting a paycheck for it."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great quote to refer to when your feeling down trying to crack an impossible brief! And if you haven't read the book yet, well, your a mug mate...

Monday

This made me chuckle

New viral spreading across the interweb like chlamydia.

Couldn't think of an original Bond pun for a title...

This image sums up exactly what i was thinking. Amazing how many products have jumped on the 'Bond' bandwagon. Maybe all of the products managed to hype up the film so much, that it was over-hyped? Still yet to see the film but i am sure even more products managed to sneak into the film through product placement. Its great how many mediums advertising can spread across but when its delivered in such a brash fashion it sometimes becomes a little too.... 'messy' (only word i could think of to best describe it, you know what i mean)

"It would never run"

Ever had an idea so insane it was genius, so wrong it was right, so bad it was good? Well here is a blog for any idea that for one reason or another, you'd never put in your book, show a client or make. It could be for the fact that it's too grotesque, too studenty or just plain shit. Go ahead contribute to this blog by uploading them ads that make you wince when you show a scowling CD.

You are what you touch

Stumbled upon this print campaign the other day. Its for a hand wash (not to sure what one?). I love the insight 'you are what you touch' and the art direction on all three are amazing. Great example of how idea and execution can live in perfect harmony.

Wednesday

Show and Sell wednesdays

So another wednesday, another Show and Sell. It was all very creative and that. Here's a little taster of what you missed out on this week.

Here is a moving spot, both in the literal sense, and emotional. It comes from TBWA Paris for 'Pain without borders'. You may recognize some of the print executions from this campaign.

Another interesting topic was 'ants'. This was a hit at presentation:

This beauty is called ant farm where you can see the astute architectural brilliance of natures beloved ants.

Here is another video to to emphasize how kick ass ants are. Do not mess with ants people!

Till next week...

Disserfuckintation.

Yes it is that time of the year. Dissertation! Not long until i have to hand in my first draft, and i am bricking it. Cant be helped, i have a creative brain - not logic. But i am giving it my best shot. Leaves a slight bitter taste in the mouth when you realize that a written dissertation takes up 25% of a creative's degree mark. We just have to give in to the system and get on with it like everybody else i suppose. Would much rather be working on Uni briefs or polishing up our book, but hey! Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

want it

Possibly the best exhibition ever....

Stumbled upon this on the interweb. This is the work of Dutch artsits Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG. Im sure you will agree its stunning work. Click here to see more.

Great thinking...

Saw this advert today in-between 'This Morning' and 'Jeremy Kyle'. I have to say, i was very impressed. I know the shock tactic has been stressed enough already with road safety etc, but this execution is awesome. Not only the visuals but the voice over is so good. Had a search to see what company wrote the ad but no luck. Will let you know asap.

Heartless

Im going to dedicate a post to Kanye West later this week, but for now here is his latest video for his single 'Heartless'. Kanye used 65 animators from Hong Kong to make this video. The video was written and directed by himself and Hype Williams. Sweet as a nut mate, sweet as a nut...

Ninja Cats!

This is a great spot for Toyota Corolla. Haven't a clue who made it, or what their strategy is, but fuck it - who cares when the outcome is this cool. It's the first of a series so hopefully all will be revealed soon. So for now, sit back and enjoy.

Hunger: by Steve McQueen

Its not the first time you would have heard 'Steve McQueen' and 'ruddy good film' in the same sentence. This time its a little different, theres a new Steve McQueen on the movie scene.

This Steve McQeen has a successful career in art and shot to fame after winning the turner prize in 1999. Now he focuses his artistic talents on mainstream cinema with the release of his debut film Hunger. Hunger is based on the true story of Bobby Sands - an IRA Hunger Striker in the 1970s. The film picked up the 'first time director' award at Cannes this year and is up for seven British Independent Awards later this year. Hopefully we will be able to find time in our busy schedule to watch this film. May be just what we need to take out minds off of intense briefs for a couple of hours.

Saturday

Homer Simpson = Donald Draper?

A couple of months ago i paid homage to the american TV series 'Mad Men'. Mad Men is written and directed by the same guys that brought you The Sopranos, it's set in 1960's advertising and has won a bucket of awards. The Simpsons have created this clever parody from the opening credits of Mad Men to promote their Halloween special.

cool eh?
